The range of emotions
Adjustment to parenthood is a gradual and intensely emotional process. The emotions you feel during the first week with your new baby will range from complete delight to utter exhaustion, and there will be many times when you are filled with doubts about your ability to be a good parent. If you have other children, you may wonder how you will be able to cope with their needs as well as those of your new baby.

The enormous changes in lifestyle may put some strain on your family and personal relationships. If you have taken maternity leave, the changes in your daily routine may leave you feeling adrift. And the increase in stress and responsibility is sure to affect your emotional equilibrium.

Postpartum depression
The hormonal shifts associated with pregnancy and childbirth are presumed to be responsible for what has come to be known as postpartum depression. This condition affects about 80% of women and usually occurs within 10 days (and for the most part within only 3 or 4 days) after delivery. Although it has never been proved that hormones are the cause, estrogen is known to act as a mild antidepressant, and low estrogen levels may affect mood.

Typical symptoms include weepiness, anxiety, low energy, insomnia, and irritability. The best way to handle this situation is to ask for emotional support when you need it and know that these feelings will pass. If these symptoms don't improve within a couple of weeks, consult your physician or speak to a family counselor.
