Young infants gain control of their muscles remarkably fast.  Babies go from being unable to hold their heads upright at birth to using their large muscles to sit up by themselves around age 6 months.  Young babies’ small muscles also improve rapidly, allowing them to grab and handle objects.

How do babies gain these amazing abilities so quickly?  Their central nervous systems mature rapidly, making them better able to coordinate their movements.  Nutrition plays a critical role during this time.

Iron has long been recognized as essential for a healthy nervous system.  More recently, researchers have learned of the significance of AA and DHA in central nervous system development.  The biofactor taurine has also been identified as important.

While the body can make its own taurine, AA, and DHA, young babies may benefit from a dietary source.  These biofactors are present in breast milk and are found in Wyeth's infant formula. Also, iron may be more easily absorbed when formulas are fortified with the biofactor Vitamin C.
