Spitting Up

Spitting up, also known as regurgitation, is a very common problem for babies. Most babies spit up at least occasionally, and some spit up with every feeding. Both breastfed and bottle-fed babies spit up.

Babies may spit up some milk mixed with saliva and mucus when they are burping or drooling, particularly when they have eaten more than their stomachs can hold. If the milk went only as far as the esophagus before coming back up, it will look the same as it did when your baby drank it. But if the milk traveled down to the stomach before returning, it will look and smell sour.
